For the past 6 weeks, we’ve been covering the ins and outs of building sales funnels for your business. And, if you haven’t recognized the importance of these funnels by now, then odds are you’re not really serious about growing your business. Up to this point, we’ve laid a firm foundation for you to start with, but today we get down into the nitty gritty of the sales funnel steps. With 2018 right around the corner, this is the guide you need to ensure you have your best year yet.

Building Your Value Ladder

When you’re laying out your sales funnel steps, you need to start by looking at your value ladder. In fact, a value ladder is so important that I’ve decided while writing this that I’m going to write a full post about it latter this week. Make sure to check back on Wednesday for that. Of course, for those who don’t know what a value ladder is, let’s cover the basics.

If you’re acquiring a new customer, the best way to do that is to start small. No one is going to buy your $10,000 coaching package if they just found out about you. But, if you build your sales funnel right, they will buy your free+shipping book offer. And, as you acquire them, the next step is to get them to buy your video course, then your online membership access, and then eventually build to that $10,000 investment.

Maximizing Profits

One of the biggest mistakes business owners makes when laying out their sales funnel steps is leaving money on the table. Remember, you’re not just building an ad for your product or service -you’re building a funnel. By design, a funnel is meant to feed people through the process and bring them out the other side as customers. Not everyone will make it through, but those who do you want to engage with as much as possible.

Remember, the more they ascend the value ladder, the more they receive from you. So, you’re not doing anyone a favor by failing to send them up that value ladder.

The Essential Sales Funnel Steps

mapping your sales steps

So, last week we talked about sales funnel design. And, there I touched on some of the different types of sales funnels you can build and how you would design based on the type. This week, I actually want to focus in a bit more on the essential overarching steps. And, it’s simpler than you think.

  1. Collect Information: Every sales funnel needs a way to collect information from clients. Whether it’s just an email, a name and email, a phone number, name, and email, or any other combination of data, you need to know who is going through your funnel. This is the first step on bringing anyone through your process.
  2. Provide Value: Here’s the secret that too many people miss. Everyone needs to provide value in their funnel. A well-written sales letter or VSL (video sales letter) provides value. Sure, it might not be a teaching opportunity and that value might be less-than-obvious, but it has to be there.
  3. Sell Something: Out of the sales funnel steps, this is the one that most often gets butchered. I made the mistake myself too many times, so I get it. No matter what you’re doing, you need to be selling something. Even in an optin funnel, the thank you page should direct people somewhere that offers an item or service for sales.
  4. Move Up the Ladder: Whether its in your online sales funnel or the upsells take place offline, you must work to move people up your value ladder. This is really what makes a sales funnel what it is, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can just create a simple one-step funnel and be done. Use the funnel!
